Immediately east of the University of Akron, Middlebury contains a variety of housing options and major institutions, including the Summa hospital complex and the Goodyear Tire headquarters. The village of Middlebury on the Little Cuyahoga River was the first settlement in what is now Akron. Along East Market Street, the Summa facilities, retail, and office uses dominate. Car dealerships, fast food, medical offices, and associated businesses are the primary land uses. Route 8 and I-76 offer convenient highway access. Mason Park provides a range of recreational opportunities. Middlebury has a very young population. Over a third of residents are under 18, and nearly three-fourths are under 45. Middlebury is Akron’s most diverse community, with the mix of Whites and African-Americans closely reflecting that of the City as a whole. Almost six percent of its population has racial and ethnic backgrounds other than White or African-American. In the 2000 Census, the average household income was 74% of the average household income in Akron, Ohio. Even though household income lagged the City, there was a large percentage drop in persons in poverty and an almost equally large rise in average household income.

Middlebury residents are less well educated than City residents in general. Nearly a third of adults 25 and over did not graduate from high school. n Persons with some college training, bachelor’s or graduate degrees represent 30% of the population, compared to 45% of Akron’s population. Slightly over one-half of Middlebury’s employed population are either in Production, Transportation, and Material Moving Occupations or Technical, Sales, and Office occupations.  There are substantially fewer persons in Management or Professional Occupations than in the City. Middlebury has a lower percentage of Married households than Akron. Over one-third of Married or Single-Parent households have their children under 18 living with them.

Middlebury has the highest percentage of pre- 1940 housing stock of any City neighborhood. Although some new construction occurred between 1940 and 1980, a new housing development was slow in the 1990s. n Middlebury owner-occupied housing appreciated by over 50% in the 1990s. However, the average value of Middlebury’s owner-occupied housing is 56% of the average value of owner-occupied housing in the City. Bed Bug Exterminator Akron
