North Hill

The plateau at the top of North Hill developed rapidly after it was connected with Downtown in 1922 by a viaduct over the Cascade Valley of the Little Cuyahoga River. It is bordered on the west by Cascade Valley Metropark, on the east by Gorge Metropark, and on the north by Cuyahoga Falls. North Hill is primarily a single-family residential community. n Retail/commercial corridors along North Main Street, East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue, Tallmadge Avenue, and Home Avenue serve North Hill. The age distribution of residents of North Hill is almost identical to that of Akron. The dominant age group is 20 – 44-year-olds. North Hill was originally home to European immigrants, primarily from Italy and Poland. Today North Hill is a racially and ethnically diverse community. Almost three-fourths White and almost one-fourth African-American, North Hill continues to attract new immigrants. North Hill’s average household income rose more in the 1990s and reached roughly the same level as other City households. At the same time, the poverty rate dropped more in North Hill than in Akron, Ohio.

The dominant educational achievement of North Hill residents is high school graduates. There are lower percentages of persons with college degrees and graduate degrees than in the City. North Hill residents are slightly more likely than other Akronites to be in Production, Transportation, and Material Moving occupations, and less likely to be in Management and Professional occupations.

Walking down the streets of North Hill, it’s possible to hear more than a dozen languages. Nepali men wear traditional Daura-Suruwals and Afghani women dress in burqas, maintaining their culture and identity through dress. From English to Vietnamese to Nepali and Arabic, North Hill is a multicultural neighborhood where people from all over the world now reside. This has long been North Hill’s story. For more than a century, the neighborhood has been a home for waves of immigrants, refugees, and African Americans. The city says North Hill is the most racially and ethnically diverse community in Akron. Bed Bug Exterminator Akron

“North Hill has always been a welcoming community,” says Sylvia Gage, who has lived in North Hill for more than 50 years. “We’ve always had different people come in here. I can’t think of any other neighborhood that’s as open and as mixed as this community is.”
